Description

The BA in International Relations offers the students a specialization in Economic Diplomacy and is entirely taught in Chinese. The entire batch consists of international students only. The programme offers international students the chance to study International Relations in a complete Chinese setting, surrounded by an outstanding Chinese faculty.

Upon graduation, students are prepared for internationally-focused careers in government, NGOs, and the private sectors, specifically in departments dealing with China or Chinese foreign affairs. During the four years of academic study, students develop the skills they need to understand and take part in an interconnected world: political awareness, economic understanding, cultural competency, and global citizenship. Additionally, they will gain a superior understanding of the Chinese economy and political system.

The curriculum is firmly rooted in the liberal arts and sciences, inherently interdisciplinary, and aimed at helping students to think critically, clearly and methodologically about the most pressing global economic challenges.
SIR faculty and courses help students acquire critical intellectual dispositions and expanded practical and theoretical knowledge - enabling them to think critically, creatively, and independently about important international issues.

SIR adds a particular emphasis in the growing role played by China in the international arena and the principles subsiding the Chinese stance. There is truly no better place for an independent study of International Relations, where the insights behind the Chinese drive in IR engagement are so clearly emphasized!

Though the application can also be done through the CSC [provide link], SIR strongly encourages the prospective students to apply directly, through UIBE’s School of International Education.

The prospective candidates will be screened according to their learning performance, motivation for the study of International Relations, leadership qualities and extracurricular activities. Excellent personal and academic qualifications are required. Cultural factors are considered in the evaluation process.

A good command of the Chinese language is mandatory and an HSK Level 5 certificate is required before graduation.

Application

Prospective students willing to apply for SIR’s BA Programme in IR through UIBE’s School of International Education should submit their complete applications before May each year.

Language

The courses are taught entirely in Chinese, consequently a good command of Chinese is expected. An HSK Level 5 certificate is required before the graduation. A working-level knowledge of English is desired, but not mandatory.

Credits

A minimum number of 146 credits is required for graduation. Students are expected to accumulate a number of 120 credits from their coursework and an additional number of 14 credits from internship and practicum programmes. The BA thesis will be granted an additional number of 12 credits.

The coursework credits are structured according to the typical Chinese curricula, consisting of mandatory foundation courses (taught for all the students of the university, regardless their major), elective foundation courses, mandatory academic courses (taught for the students following the same major), elective academic courses and academic specialization courses. A minimum number of 55 credits for public mandatory courses and 44 credits for academic mandatory courses is required. BA Thesis

The BA Thesis is considered the capstone of the BA programme and should emphasize the candidates’ ability to properly understand and apply the concepts learnt throughout the study programme in the field of International Relations. The thesis will be written in Chinese and submitted during the eight semester, before March 1, and defended before the May 5 of the graduation year.
